 Osu🐉👊🏼!

Many people wonder... What does the word Osu mean and why do we use it at Tatsushin?

I'll explain it to you. Osu comes from Kyokushin karate and is now also widely used in Kickboxing.

Only the real meaning is often no longer told. Very unfortunate, because if you read on you will understand it.

Every question in Kyokushin karate is answered with Osu. Every greeting is Osu! Every instruction or question in class is answered with "Osu" instead of "Yes" or "I understand". When practicing Kihon Waza (basic techniques), each technique is often accompanied by a loud "Osu". When you are engaged in Jiyu Kumite (free fighting) and your opponent uses a good, hard technique, you show respect for your opponent's skills with a loud "Osu". As a sign of respect, competitive fighters also bow forward, to the referee and to each other with a loud "Osu", both before and after the fight.

Osu is a combination of two words, namely: Oshi (Oshaeru): meaning "to push" Shinobu: meaning "to endure/undergo" It also means patience, respect, appreciation, perseverance and perseverance. To develop a strong mind and body it is necessary to undergo rigorous training. Tatsushin training requires a lot from you. You keep pushing your limits until you think the limit has been reached. Your body will give up first, but your mind will tell you to continue. After that, your mind will also indicate that this is the limit, but your mind ensures that you can continue. When you reach this point, you will have to battle with yourself and your weaknesses to overcome them. To do this you will have to endure pain, you will have to learn to persevere, but above all you will have to have patience. That's Osu! You cannot learn Kyokushin karate in an instant. It takes years to master the basics. The basic techniques are repeated thousands of times (Ren-Ma - "keep polishing") until it becomes a kind of reflex or instinct, without consciously thinking about it (Mushin - "no thought"). It's easy to get frustrated when you have to do the same exercises over and over again, and the progression is in small increments. To overcome this frustration and maintain the training you need patience and determination. That's Osu! The reason you undergo this hard training is because you care about yourself, and when you care about yourself you also respect yourself. This self-respect develops and expands into respect for your teacher and your fellow students. When you enter and leave the Dojo you bow and say "Osu". This shows that you respect the Dojo and the time you spend there. This feeling of respect is Osu! During training you do your utmost, because you respect yourself. When you have finished an exercise after hard training, bow to your teacher and fellow students and say "Osu" again. You do this out of appreciation. This feeling of appreciation is Osu! Osu is a very important word within (kyokushin) karate, because it means patience, respect and appreciation. All this shows why we always use the word Osu; to remind us of these indispensable qualities. The ultimate dedication required to follow the path of Kyokushin is Osu!
